Solar Thermal

Over recent years there have been many solar plants and wind turbine farms popping up all over South Africa but never before has this country had a solar thermal electricity plant until now. KaXu Solar One plant near Pofadder in the Northern Cape has come online on the 2nd of March 2015. It will add an additional 100 Megawatts of electricity to the South African national grid which is the equivalent of roughly 320 Gigawatt hours of electricity per year. It will be sufficient to power the combined households of Mossel Bay, Oudshoorn, Knysna and Swellendam which adds up to about 80 000 households. Not only is this the first of its kind in South Africa but the biggest one on the African continent and the Southern hemisphere. The farm occupies a mere 3 square kilometers  and contains 336 000 mirrors tracking the sun. STE (Solar Thermal Energy) Technology allows energy to be stored for up to two-and-a-half hours in molten salt enabling the plant to supply power to the grid during peak times when it is needed most.
